Wedding Rings & Customs
In past generations, women wore wedding bands much more commonly than men did. According to some customs, the wedding ring forms the last in a series of gifts, which also may include the engagement ring, traditionally given as a betrothal present.
For your amusement and consideration, noted below are some famous Wedding Customs - and expressions - that we still find prevalent today.
"Tying the Knot"
In ancient times, the bride wore a girdle fastened with many tiny knots. The groom had the pleasure of untying all those knots before he could bed his new wife.
"Cans Tied To The Bumper"
It is traditional for people to bang pots, ring cowbells and generally make a lot of discordant noise after the ceremony to ward off evil spirits. In modern times, it has become traditional to tie tin cans to the bumper in reflection of this old practice.
"The Wedding Kiss"
The wedding kiss seals the marriage legally between the couple and the ceremony must be witnessed by at least one other person.
"Bridal Bouquet"
In ancient times (when some marriages were "arranged") the bridal bouquet signified the bride's feelings toward the marriage by her choice of flowers. It became traditional for the bride to throw the bouquet to the unmarried female guests. The superstition is that whoever catches the bouquet will be the next to marry.
"Honking of Car Horns"
This relates back to when, in ancient times, they banged pots and pans after the ceremony to ward off evil spirits. In modern times, our wedding customs dictate that we blow car horns while following the bridal procession to the church ceremony, again, to ward off evil spirits.
"Wedding Bells"
People would bring bells, pots, pans and any other thing that they could bang and make loud discordant noise with. This was said to drive away the evil spirits who might be lingering near the couple.
There are Superstitions . . .
So, we see that the modern day wedding rituals are knee deep in ... superstition. Should we do away with them just because of old and silly beliefs? Not when they're so much fun, and, one that we all enjoy - is the jewelry.
Today, both partners often wear wedding rings. Where occupations or professions discourage the wearing of jewelry (for obvious reasons, such as in the field of heavy equipment operators and workers, etc.) people often remove their wedding rings for safety and comfort.
You can find wedding rings labeled as "comfort fit" if a ring on your finger is uncomfortable. These rings feature a slightly rounded inner surface for comfortable wear. A classic choice, comfort-fit wedding bands are not only good looking, but gives the lasting impression of good taste. Comfort fit wedding rings are easy to wear and are available in sleek and streamlined designs.
