Asscher Cut: Square cut diamond with 72 facets. The cut's wide step facets and deep clipped corners make the gemstone resemble an octagon. The revival of this kind of art deco style diamond jewelry has been the catalyst to bring the Asscher cut diamond back to the forefront of today’s diamond buying public. The diamond has a basic square outline and step facets, but that is it. The diamond cutter will craft each Asscher diamond with intent on maximizing light performance and beauty. The result is a diamond of incredible beauty and timeless appeal.

Half Moon Cut: The half moon diamonds are used mainly for side stones and have the profile of half a round or half an oval diamond. They have a straight edge on one side and curved side on the other. Half moon diamonds look great with rectangular center stones such as princess, radiant or emerald because they have one straight side. Because of the rounded edge, half moon diamonds also work well with oval shaped stones.

Brilliant Bullet Cut: A modification of the pentagon cut, the shape of which is produced by varying the length and angles of the sides. Resembles a bullet in outline.

Brilliant Kite Cut: A fancy shape which resembles a kite, or the sectional profile of a diamond viewed from the side.

Brilliant Taper Cut: This diamond cut is called so because it is slightly tapered towards the end. This results in beautiful facets on the diamond that generate a lot of brilliancy. This cut is made from a straight baguette that is rectangular in shape. Hence the only difference between a baguette and a taper cut is the tapered look which is acquired from polishing its bottom.

Brilliant Trapezoid Cut: The trapezoid cut diamond is a four sided shaped with the top and bottom sides parallel and the other sides slanting inward. The outline looks like a triangle with one of the ends cut off. The trapezoid cut diamonds are used mainly for side stones and are cut in brilliant-cut or step-cut . The brilliant trapezoid looks great with brilliant cut rectangular center stones like radiants and princess diamonds.

Grace Cut: The Grace Cut diamond is one in a series of branded fancy shapes called the Royal Cuts, manufactured and distributed by the partnership of Israel-based companies.

Cushion Cut: A cushion cut is a square or squarish-rectangular cut with rounded corners and 58 brilliant-style facets that resemble a pillow shape, hence the name. Cushion cuts are a little less brilliant than modern round brilliant diamonds, but are more dispersive (which refers to the separation of white light into spectral colors). Cushion cut diamonds are extremely beautiful when used and incorporated in lavish diamond engagement rings, like antique or vintage diamond wedding rings.

Oval Cut: A modified brilliant cut in the shape of an oval. A style popular for women with small hands, because its elongated shape gives the illusion of length to the hands and fingers.

Princess Cut: A square or rectangular modified brilliant cut, usually with 57 facets. This relatively new cut has been quite popular recently. Requires more weight to be directed toward the diamond's depth in order to maximize brilliance.

Round Cut: This 58-facet cut features a facet arrangement that appears to radiate out from the center of the diamond toward its outer rim, maximizing its brilliance.

Taper Baguette: A tapered modification of the standard baguette.

Step Trapezoid: The step-cut trapezoids are usually seen next to emerald or Asscher cut center stones. The rectangular emerald shape is ideal for step-cut trapezoid diamonds because it is long enough to accommodate a nice sized side stone between its cut corners.

Emerald Cut: A square or rectangular shape with cut corners. Known as a step cut because its long rectangular facets resemble stair steps. Inclusions and poor color are more apparent in this cut, so make sure to select a stone of superior clarity and color. This is another "step" cut, but with the four corners mitred. This is done largely to protect the stone, as any sharp points are vulnerable to getting chipped.

Heart Cut: A modified brilliant cut in the shape of a heart with a table, 32 crown facets, 24 pavilion facets and a shield-shaped culet.

Taper Bullet: Another tapered modification of the standard baguette, resembles a bullet.

Pear Cut: A variation of the brilliant cut, and a hybrid of the oval and marquise, with a teardrop-shaped girdle outline and 56 to 58 facets. Like the oval, a good choice for a hand with smaller fingers. You get the beautiful rounded edge on top of the diamond, as well as the distinctive taper on the bottom.

Radiant Cut: A cross between a round cut and emerald cut diamond, the radiant cut diamond can be quite beautiful and brilliant. The radiant diamond is typically comprised of 70 facets and is either square or rectangular in shape.

Square Radiant: A rectangular or square brilliant cut with 70 facets that combines the elegance of the emerald shape with the brilliance of a round. Like the princess, requires more weight to be directed toward the diamond's depth to maximize brilliance.

Step Kite: The brilliant kite diamond is usually used for side stones. Because of its long shape, the brilliant kite diamond is also used down the shank of rings. A unique use of kite shaped diamonds uses 5 kite shaped diamonds set in a star design, invisible set in the center and held with single prongs on each of the "star's" points. These kite shaped stars can be used for earrings or pendants.

Trilliant Cut: A triangular-shaped cut developed in Amsterdam, with 25 facets on the crown, 19 facets on the pavilion and a polished girdle. Can either have pointed corners or a more rounded triangular shape.

Choosing the shape of your diamond jewelry is one of the key elements in determining the overall appearance of your ring or other diamond jewelry. There are many shapes and variations from which to choose, but first off do not confuse "shape" with "cut".

A diamond's shape is just that: the outward appearance of the stone, whether it is round, oval etc.; while the cut refers to how the diamond itself is fashioned, how many facets and so on.
